Report: Kremlin denies placing political ads on Facebook

MOSCOW, Sep 22 (PRIME) -- The Kremlin has nothing to do with the placement of political advertisements on social network Facebook and does not know who was behind such tasks, business daily Vedomosti reported on Friday on its Web site, citing the Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“We don’t know who places advertisements on Facebook and how. We’ve never done such things. The Russian side has never been involved in that,” Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin does not know what Russiagate is.

Earlier in September, Peskov also denied the information on Russia’s advertisements in Facebook to influence the U.S. elections’ outcome.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said late on Thursday that the social network will inform the U.S. Congress on purchases of political advertisements in the interests of Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign and related fake accounts.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook is “actively working with the U.S. government on its ongoing investigations into Russian interference.”

The resource had been investigating the matter for many months, and for a while found no evidence of fake accounts linked to Russia running ads, but it had recently uncovered this activity and will hand over the materials to Congress, Zuckerberg said.
